COVINGTON, GA: MAY 16-19
For the 21st edition of the Georgia Tandem Rally, we return to Covington for the first time since 2013. They have shot hundreds of movies and TV shows in Covington, and you will probably recognize the town from one of your favorites. Our hotels are set. Our venues are set. All we need is you. Details are subject to change, but here’s what we have so far…
THURSDAY, MAY 16
We’ll gather at the host hotel for a registration shindig.
FRIDAY, MAY 17
Our first day of riding features a remote start from Social Circle with routes from 30-60 miles. We’ve got something for every riding ability. You will have an opportunity for your post-ride lunch at the regionally famous Blue Willow Inn, named the best buffet in the USA by the NY Times. Right now, we are planning a GTR happy hour on Friday afternoon. Also on Friday, we are trying something new: Ice Cream Your Way All Day, where you can go to Scoops, the official ice cream store of the Georgia Tandem Rally at any time on Friday and get ice cream. Want ice cream for breakfast? No problem! You can have it for lunch or dinner as well. No more waiting around for that Friday night ice cream social that you are probably too tired to go to anyway.
SATURDAY, MAY 18
Saturday is traditionally our busiest day of the weekend and this day will not disappoint. We’ve got options of 30-60 miles with lunch at the Georgia Wildlife Federation, just two miles from the end of your route. Our banquet on Saturday is a BBQ blowout (tofu option available) at Georgia Piedmont Technical College, which is about four miles from our host hotels.
SUNDAY, MAY 19
We have time for one more ride of either 25 or 35 miles before we pack up the tandems and head for home. You will leave Covington well-ridden and well-fed.
GTR RIDES AND TERRAIN
We have rolling hills this year. Some sections are flatter than others, but expect the occasional cardio challenge during the weekend. Here’s the breakdown of daily climbing, according to Ride With GPS:
32 miles: 1200 feet
45 miles: 2000 feet
60 miles: 2900 feet
31 miles: 1200 feet
46 miles: 2000 feet
59 miles: 2300 feet
25 miles: 1100 feet
35 miles: 1500 feet
COVINGTON, GA, USA
Located 40 miles east of Atlanta, Covington still has small-town charm that has not been devoured by the urban sprawl of Atlanta. Not yet, anyway. Did you see “Goosebumps 2”? It was just filmed in Covington. So was an obscure rom-com we just watched. Who knows what will be shooting while we are there. The town square is picturesque and home to many excellent restaurants. The roads are lightly-traveled and we have great access to our routes from the host hotels. Use the map below to see how far Covington is from you.
